Hey there,
Whether you’re here for the hauntings or just browsing through, welcome to Haintland. I’m so glad you found your way down this winding road.
Over the past few days, more than 350 new readers joined this strange little corner of Substack. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself—and thank you for joining.
Who’s behind Haintland?
I’m Margeaux, a neurodivergent children’s book author and budding horror and speculative fiction writer with a soft spot for Southern Gothic vibes and haunted stories.
You might know me from my nonfiction work for young readers—my latest, Everything But Typical (a celebration of neurodivergent changemakers), hits shelves this September with Bloomsbury.
I’ve also worked as an editor for the past eight years:
At a Penguin Random House–affiliated publisher
At FIYAH Literary Magazine of Black Speculative Fiction
As a mentor/coach with We Need Diverse Books
As a freelance speculative fiction editor
I’ve had bylines in Ebony.com, Paste Magazine, and elsewhere—but these days, my heart belongs to writing horror set in the South.
Haintland is where I’m carving out my space as a speculative author, bringing to life the eerie, supernatural tales rooted in Southern soil. These stories have lived in my head—rent free—for the past few years and it feels great to finally share them in a serialized format.
What Can You Expect?
Biweekly Southern Horror
Bonus lore posts on the real legends or cultural nuance that inspired each tale
Occasional haunting visuals or playlists—if the spirits move me
Thank You
If you’ve read, shared, commented, or simply lingered quietly in the shadows—thank you. You’re helping bring Haintland to life and I sincerely appreciate you.
If you’re enjoying the stories and want to help them grow, consider subscribing and pledging your support. I have some amazing things planned for this first season of Haintland and your continued support goes a long way.

One more thing—feel free to leave a comment or introduce yourself.
I’d love to know where you’re reading from, what brought you here, or your favorite bit of folklore.
Haintland is growing, and you’re part of it now.
Looking forward to reading your work.
